چکیده

According to our observation of turbulence generation, all small length scales are generated by shear layer instability. The size of small vortices should be determined by the smallest stable shear layer, e.g. smallest shear layer like laminar sub-layer in the wall bounded flow. This paper provides a new estimation of the smallest length scale by using the shear layer stability analysis, which is different from Kolmogorov micro scales, or 3/4 0(Re ) −

A hybrid approach for simulating turbulent collisions of hydrodynamically-interacting particles

A hybrid direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach is proposed for simulating turbulent collisions of hydrodynamically-interacting particles, under the assumptions that the disturbance flows due to particles are very localized in space and there is a sufficient length-scale separation between the particle size and the Kolmogorov scale of the undisturbed turbulent flow. The approach consists of...

Local dissipation scales in turbulent jets

This paper reports an experimental investigation of the characteristics of local dissipation length-scale field  in turbulent (round and square) jets with various jet-exit Reynolds numbers. Results reveal that the probability density function (PDF) of , denoted by Q(), in the central fully-turbulent region, is insensitive to initial flow conditions and the departure from anisotropy. Excellen...

Inlet Boundary Conditions for Embedded Les

The paper evaluates a new method to prescribe synthesized turbulent inlet boundary conditions. The method can also be used when prescribing turbulent fluctuations at an interface between (U)RANS and LES regions when the flow enters the LES region. When making LES, DES or hybrid LES-RANS a precursor channel DNS is often used. The disadvantage of this method is that it is difficult to re-scale th...

Use of direct numerical simulation (DNS) data to investigate spatial resolution issues in measurements of wall-bounded turbulence

The effect of limited spatial resolution for hot-wire anemometry (HWA) is investigated by analysing the two-dimensional energy spectra from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent channel flow at Reτ ≈ 950. Various spanwise filter lengths are applied to the streamwise velocity components in order to mimic the limited spatial resolution of a single-normal hot-wire experiment. Clear attenu...

The influence of pipe length in direct numerical simulation

A direct numerical simulation (DNS) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow is performed at Reτ ≈ 170 and 500 to examine the effect of the streamwise domain length on the convergence of turbulence statistics. Computational domain lengths vary from the πδ to 20πδ. Lower order statistics such as mean flow, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stress, correlations and higher order statistics including ...
